It’s only Meakin but I like it…

Meakin Carousel

Seriously, how can you not love this bustling carousel with its jolly painted horses and flailing arms? This pattern is called Carousel and it’s a china design by Alfred Meakin.

Meakin clovelly

Meakin are one of the Stoke in Trent pottery companies formed in the late 1800s. They produced lots of cheap ironstone pottery throughout the 19th century.

Meakin Montmartre

The appeal of the China lay in it’s hard wearing nature and it’s fashionable designs.

Many of Meakin’s lines were exported to America, and were very popular there.

There are several decades of Meakin out there and I was lucky enough to pick some up for a matter of pence at a car boot sale a few years ago. I have also come across it being sold at scandalously high prices in charity and antique shops. It’s rather charming and one of many things I could get addicted to.

I’m keeping an eye out for any on my travels and hope to add some to my collection – for the right price you understand!

It’s only a Charity Shop but I like it…

Had a little Charity Shop wander this week – in the city centre this time as I happened to be down that way.

This lovely pale blue serving platter was my first find. It’s Meakin and at three pounds it had to come home with me. It’s huge and quite heavy but I don’t have anything like that. It’ll be perfect if I do end up doing a roast chicken or a joint of meat anytime for family.

I have a plan for my kitchen – I want all my baking ingredients in nice jars on a shelf. This definitely meets my criteria! Love that blue lid…

CF3This enamel mug was only 99p and I love enamel. It was such a pretty duck egg blue. I’m not sure what I’ll use it for – I don’t tend to drink out of my enamel mugs. Once burnt my lips on a cuppa and am now too scared!

Not a bad haul for £6. Feeling quite happy with that!

It is with a smug smile I say:

Had a quick whizz around the Southampton town centre shops today and was very pleased with my finds.
This large vacuum flask was in great condition and I love the little Good Housekeeping Institute logo! I nearly put it back on the shelf due to lack of space in my kitchen but it’s exactly the kind of thing I scour charity shops trying to find so walking away without it would have been a travesty!

I also spied this Meakin serving dish. I do love these patterns! This china was so prevalent in the homes of my Mum’s friends when I was growing up it makes me feel cosy.

It is with a one-bed-flat bulging at the seams I say:
